There have been rumors since the last two years that this world would end on December 21, 2012. Many news channels flashed this news over the years.

Credulous people believe such things readily but I think we need to use our brains before believing it. If the world has to end, then it does not need to be 2012. It can end at any time. There are many forces of nature active since the birth of the earth, which can destroy it in a splash of a second. The basis for this belief lies in the Mayan calendar, which is going to end in December 2012. The Mayan people believe that the end of the calendar means the end of an era and not the end of the world. A new era would begin afterward.

I do not know who spread this rumor. I initially thought that some commercial companies might be behind this to make people spend more but cannot say anything. A movie named ‘2012’ also has been made on this topic.

Possible catastrophes which can bring the end of the world:

1. Solar Storms.

2. Ice age.

3. Melting of ice at the earth poles flooding the earth.

4. Asteroids striking the earth.

5. Big cyclones.

As far as Hindu culture is considered, no proof in any Hindu scripture supports this belief. There is a concept of Yuga in Hinduism according to which the world ends at the end of each Yuga and a new era is started. We are presently in Kali Yuga, which has started 5000 years ago and would last a few thousand years more. Hindus believe that whenever such a catastrophe comes on the earth, Lord Vishnu reincarnates himself and saves human beings.

Even the Nostradamus has predicted the future up until the 35th century or even beyond that.

Therefore, I think it is just a rumor that this world would end in December 2012.
