Saraswati Vandana is a popular Hindu prayer of the goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education, knowledge, music, arts, and speech. She is the wife of Lord Brahma, who is the creator of the universe. What is Saraswati Vandana?

It is a short and beautiful Sanskrit prayer in which the goddess Saraswati is highly praised. There is a depiction of what she is wearing, like a white saree, ornaments, the musical instrument she is carrying, etc. In the end, the devotee requests her to protect him/her. Some people call it a mantra, but I think it is not a mantra because Vandana means prayer or praise in Sanskrit.

Who wrote Saraswati Vandana?

I tried to find out who wrote it but could not get much information. Saraswati Vandana in Hindi (“Var de Veenavaadini var de”) is written by Suryakant Tripathi “Nirala,” which is different than the Sanskrit prayer.

Significance of Saraswati Vandana:

Many music teachers chant this prayer before they begin their daily work. Saraswati Puja is a festival dedicated to the goddess. On this day, Hindus chant the prayer to please her. Devotees of the goddess regularly chant it. Regular recitation of the prayer helps to improve memory, speech, and concentration. It removes ignorance and confusion and bestows intelligence to the devotee. It is recommended that one should chant it before starting the studies.

या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्रावृता
या वीणावरदण्डमण्डितकरा या श्वेतपद्मासना ।
या ब्रह्माच्युतशङ्करप्रभृतिभिर्देवैस्सदा वन्दिता
सा मां पातु सरस्वती भगवती नि:शेषजाड्यापहा ॥

Transliteration:

Yaa Kundendu tushaara haara-dhavalaa, Yaa shubhra-vastra’avritaa,
Yaa veena-vara-danda-manditakara, Yaa shweta padma’asana |
Yaa brahma’achyuta shankara prabhritibhir Devai-sadaa Vanditaa,
Saa Maam Paatu Saraswati Bhagavatee Nihshesha jaadya’apahaa ||

Meaning in Hindi:

जो कुंद फूल, चंद्रमा और वर्फ के हार के समान श्वेत हैं, जो शुभ्र वस्त्र धारण करती हैं,

जिनके हाथ, श्रेष्ठ वीणा से सुशोभित हैं, जो श्वेत कमल पर आसन ग्रहण करती हैं.

ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश आदिदेव, जिनकी सदैव स्तुति करते हैं,

हे माँ भगवती सरस्वती, आप मेरी सारी (मानसिक) जड़ता को हरें.

Meaning in English:

Who is pure white like Jasmine, with the coolness of Moon, the brightness of Snow and shines like the garland of Pearls, Who is covered with pure white garments,

Whose hands are adorned with Veena (a stringed musical instrument) and the boon-giving staff; and Who is seated on a pure white Lotus,

Who is always adored by Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and other gods,

O Goddess Saraswati, please protect me and remove my ignorance completely.

शुक्लां ब्रह्मविचारसार परमामाद्यां जगद्व्यापिनीं
वीणा–पुस्तक–धारिणीमभयदां जाड्यान्धाकारापहाम् |
हस्ते स्फाटिकमालिकां विदधतीं पद्मासने संस्थिताम्

श्वेत रंग वाली ब्रह्मा के विचार के सार में लगी हुई, आदि शक्ति समस्त जगत में व्याप्त रहने वाली,

हाथों में वीणा और पुस्तक धारण करने वाली, अभयदान देने वाली तथा मूर्खता के अंधकार को दूर करने वाली,

हाथों में स्फटिक मणियों की माला धारण करने वाली, कमलासन पर विराजमान,

बुद्धि देने वाली उस परम तेजस्वी मां सरस्वती के चरणों में मैं वंदना करता हूं.

Meaning in English:

One Who is fair in complexion, Who is the essence of Brahman, one Who pervades the universe,

With Veena in one hand and the Vedas in the other, bestower of fearlessness and remover of ignorance,

With a crystal rosary in her hand, seated on a lotus,

I bow down to that dazzling Goddess Saraswati who is the source of wisdom.
