Shri Durga Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional song that praises Goddess Durga. It is a very popular song, and many Hindus chant it daily to obtain the grace of the goddess. The word Chalisa is derived from the Hindi word “chaalis” which means forty. The devotional song contains 40 verses praising Goddess Durga; hence, it is called Durga Chalisa.

Who is Goddess Durga?

Goddess Durga is a major Hindu goddess who killed the demon Mahishasura. The demon had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he would only be killed by a woman. After obtaining the boon, he started harassing humans and gods. Therefore, the Hindu trinity, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, combined their powers and gave a physical form to their divine energy. Thus, Goddess Durga was born, who killed Mahishasura.

Who Wrote Shri Durga Chalisa?

The composer of Durga Chalisa is Devidas. It is not clear whether it is the real name or the pen name of the composer. There is not much information available.

क्षीरसिन्धु में करत विलासा। दयासिन्धु दीजै मन आसा॥

हिंगलाज में तुम्हीं भवानी। महिमा अमित न जात बखानी॥

नगरकोट में तुम्हीं विराजत। तिहुँलोक में डंका बाजत॥5॥

शुम्भ निशुम्भ दानव तुम मारे। रक्तबीज शंखन संहारे॥

महिषासुर नृप अति अभिमानी। जेहि अघ भार मही अकुलानी॥

रूप कराल कालिका धारा। सेन सहित तुम तिहि संहारा॥

परी गाढ़ सन्तन र जब जब। भई सहाय मातु तुम तब तब॥6॥

अमरपुरी अरु बासव लोका। तब महिमा सब रहें अशोका॥

ज्वाला में है ज्योति तुम्हारी। तुम्हें सदा पूजें नरनारी॥

प्रेम भक्ति से जो यश गावें। दुःख दारिद्र निकट नहिं आवें॥
