Names of Asura

The main aim of this article is to list the names of all Asuras. Asuras are the enemies of gods who seek heaven. They are a significant part of Hindu texts. The history of Hinduism is incomplete without them. There have been many powerful Asuras like Ravana, Mahabali, Mahishasura, etc. The three main types of Asuras are Daitya, Danava, and Rakshasa. The total number of Asuras is countless, but still, we will try to list as many names of Asuras as possible.

Names of Asuras:

A:

Aayu – the son of Hiranyakashipu.

Abhikasura – An ally of Kansa who tried to kill Lord Krishna. Took birth as Abhimanyu.

Adi – the son of Andhakasura.

Aghasura – one of the generals of Kamsa.

Ahamkarasura – born from Sun’s ego, killed by Lord Ganesha.

Ahi Ravana – the brother of Ravana and the ruler of Pataal Loka.

Akshayakumara – the son of Ravana.

Alambasa – a friend of Duryodhana whom Satyaki defeated in a battle.

Alaamvushaa – Jatasura’s son skilled in both conventional weapons and the powers of illusion.

Alayudha – the brother of Bakasura.

Andhakasura – the son Lord Shiva and Parvati.

Anuhlada – the brother of Prahlada.

Apasmara – a dwarf demon.

Arishtasura – the bull demon who tried to kill Lord Krishna.

Ashva – a great demon who became King Ashoka in the Mahabharata.

Asiloma – a warrior from Mahishasura’s army.

Atikaaya – the son of Ravana and his wife Dhanyamalini.

B:

Bakasura or Vaka – a voracious Asura in the Mahabharata killed by Bhima.

Banasura – he had a thousand hands; a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

Bashkala – a warrior from Mahishasura’s army.

Bhandasura – killed by Lalitha Tripurasundari Devi.

Bhasmasura (Vrikasura) – tried to kill Lord Shiva with the boon he gave him.

Bhimasura – the son of Kumbhakarna.

Bidala – a warrior from Mahishasura’s army.

C:

Chandravarma – he is mentioned in the Adiparva of the Mahabharata as the king of Kamboj.

Chanda – the brother of Munda who fought with the goddess Kaushiki and died.

D:

Dambhasura – Lord Ganesha killed this asura.

Danavendra – the brother of Darika.

Dantavakra – the last incarnation of Lord Vishnu’s gatekeeper Vijaya.

Danu – the mother of danavas.

Darika – the brother of Danavendra. He had a curse that a woman would kill him.

Daruk – husband of Daruka.

Daruka – a demoness who became a goddess by Goddess Parvati’s blessings.

Devamba – the mother of Mahabali.

Devantaka – the son of Ravana killed by Lord Hanuman in a duel.

Dhenukasura – the donkey demon.

Dhumralochana – the commander of the demon Shumbha.

Dhundu – killed by king Kuvalyaswa and his thousand sons.

Dimbak

Diti – the mother of Asuras and the wife of Sage Kashyapa.

Dundubhi – the son of Maya and the brother of Mayavi.

Durgamasura – the son of demon Ruru. He was killed by Goddess Durga.

Durukti – sister turned wife of demon Kali.

Dushana – he came along with Khara to fight Lord Rama but got killed.

Dushpoora – the son of Kamasura.

G:

Gajasura – elephant demon. His head was attached to Lord Ganesha.

Gayasura – the son of Tripurasura.

H:

Hans

Hayagriva – a horse-headed demon who stole the Vedas.

Hiranyakashipu – Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha to kill him.

Hiranyaksha – the brother of Hiranyakashipu.

Holika – the sister of Hiranyakashipu.

Hunda – He troubled Ashokasundari but Nahusha killed him.

I:

Ilvala – he was killed by Sage Agastya.

Indrajeet or Meghanada – the son of Ravana and Mandodari.

J:

Jalandhara (Chalantarana) – the son of Lord Shiva born of the fire from his third eye.

Jara – A female demon who joined the two halves of Jarasandha.

Jatasura – he kidnapped Pandavas (except Bhima and Arjuna) and Draupadi.

Jvarasura – the demon of fever.

K:

Kabandha – he was a Gandharva cursed by Indra.

Kaithabha – born from the earwax of Lord Vishnu; brother of Madhu.

Kalabandhaka – a warrior from Mahishasura’s army.

Kakasura – the crow demon.

Kalasura – Goddess Durga killed him in the form of a young girl.

Kalanemi – there are two Asuras of this name. One was the son of Hiranyaksha, and the other was the son of Maricha.

Kalayavana – Lord Krishna fooled him to wake up King Muchukund who was in Yoga Nidra and got killed.

Kali – the ruler of Kali Yuga.

Kalakeyas – a class of Asuras.

Kamasura – an embodiment of lust; killed by Lord Ganesha.

Kamalasura – Lord Ganesha defeated the demon Kamalasura with the help of Siddhi and Buddhi.

Kaptasura

Karambha – the brother of Asura Rambha.

Karindrasura – an elephant demon; Goddess Durga killed him by taking the form Jagaddhatri.

Keshi – a horse demon who died at the hands of Lord Krishna.

Ketu – the headless demon; also a malicious graha.

Khandasura

Kharasura – an Asura in the epic Ramayana.

Krishnasura – an asura king who lived on the banks of river Anshumati. 

Krodhasura – born out of Lord Shiva’s anger; killed by Lambodara avatar of Lord Ganesha.

Kukurasura

Kumbhakarna – the brother of Ravana.

L:

Lakhyasura – He was killed by Kalubai, a form of Goddess Parvati.

M:

Madasura – Lord Ganesha killed him in his avatar of Ekadanta.

Madhu – the brother of Kaitabha.

Mahabali – Vamana Avatar sent him to the netherworld by placing his foot on his head.

Mahi Ravana – the brother of Ahi Ravana.

Mahishasura – a buffalo demon.

Mahishi – the wife of Mahishasura.

Makaraksha – the son of Kharasura; died at the hands of Lord Rama.

Malla – Lord Khandoba got the name Malhari by killing him.

Mallanga – the prophet of the Asuras, to whom the origin of erotic science is attributed.

Mamatasura – Lord Ganesha incarnated as Vighnaharta to kill him.

Mandodari – the wife of Ravana.

Mani – the brother of Malla.

Maricha – the maternal uncle of Ravana.

Matsarasura – an embodiment of jealousy; Lord Ganesha killed him as Vakratunda.

Mayasura – the father-in-law of Ravana.

Mayavi – the son of Mayasura.

Mitra – he is also worshipped as a god.

Mohasura – the demon of delusion and confusion. Lord Ganesha killed him as Mahodara.

Mukasura – an Asura from the Mahabharata; the son of Upasunda.

Munda – the servant of Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Murasura – There seems to be two Asuras by this name; one killed by Lord Krishna and the other by the goddess Ekadashi.

Mushikasura – a mouse demon; he became the vahana of Lord Ganesha after the defeat.

N:

Namuchi – the demon who removed the light from the universe.

Narakasura (Bhaumasura) – he kidnapped 16108 Kshatriya women; Lord Krishna killed him.

Narantaka – the son of Ravana.

Nigas – the demon who swallowed Lord Vishnu.

Nishumbha – the brother of Shumbha; killed by Goddess Parvati.

Nivatakavachas – a class of Asuras.

P:

Paharada – an Asura chief in Buddhism.

Palasi – killed by Barbarika.

Prahasta – chief commander of Ravana’s army of Lanka.

Praheti – the father of the Rakshasas.

Prahlada – one of the greatest devotees of Lord Vishnu.

Pralambasura – he kidnapped Balarama.

Puloman – the father of Indra’s wife, Shachi.

Putana – a demoness who tried to kill Lord Krishna by breastfeeding him poisonous milk.

R:

Rahu – the head of the Swarabhanu who tried to drink Amrit; also a shadow planet.

Raktabija – he had a boon that whenever a drop of his blood fell on the ground, another Raktabija would be born.

Rambha – he did penance by standing into a burning fire to please the fire god.

Ratnasura – One of the Asura kings.

Ravana – perhaps the most powerful Asura ever.

Repala – killed by barbarika.

Ruru – he wanted to marry Goddess Parvati.

S:

Sambarasura/Shambhara – he abducted Lord Krishna’s son Pradyumna to kill him.

Samhlada – a son of Hiranyakashipu whose sons were Nivatakavachas.

Shakatasura – the chariot demon killed by Lord Krishna.

Shankhachuda – the husband of Tulsi.

Sharmishtha – the wife of Yayati.

Shukracharya – the teacher of Asuras.

Shumbha – the brother of Nishumbha.

Shurpanakha – the sister of Ravana.

Sikshura – the commander-in-chief of Mahishasura’s army.

Somaprabha – the daughter of Mayasura.

Soshana – the son of Kamasura.

Subahu – the son of the demoness Tataka.

Suchitti – one of the Danaveghasas, present at the preaching of the Mahasamaya Sutta.

Suja – a female Asura in Buddhism.

Sunda – the brother of Upasunda.

Surapadma – Lord Kartikeya defeated him and made him his carrier (peacock).

Svarabhanu – he tried to drink Amrit by disguising himself as a god but Lord Vishnu cut his head.

T:

Tarakaksha – the son of Tarakasura.

Tarakasura – he had a boon that he could be defeated by the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati only.

Tratika or Tadaka – a demoness in the Ramayana.

Tripurasura – three sons of Taraksura.

Trishira – a son of Ravana.

Trishna – the wife of Kamasura.

Trinavarta – a servant of Kamsa who tried to kill Lord Krishna.

Trinetra – a warrior from Mahishasura’s army.

U:

Upasunda – the brother of Sunda.

Usha – the daughter of Banasura.

Utpala – Goddess Parvati killed him.

Utharaka – a warrior from Mahishasura’s army.

V:

Vajranga – he defeated and tied Indra and brought him to his mother.

Vajranaka – the father of Tarakasura.

Vajrangini – the mother of Tarakasura.

Vala – the brother of Vritrasura.

Varuna – both Mitra and Varuna are classified as gods as well asuras in the Rig Veda.

Vatapi – the brother of Ilvala.

Vatsasura – the calf demon.

Vemachitrin – he was subdued by Lord Buddha.

Vibhishana – the brother of Ravana who helped Lord Rama to defeat him.

Vidyunmali – the son of Tarakasura.

Vidyutjiva – the husband of Shurpanakha.

Viprachitti – the husband of Holika.

Viradha – he tried to kidnap Goddess Sita.

Virochana – the son of Prahlada.

Viryavana – the son of Tarakasura.

Virupaksha – he fought on the side of Ravana.

Vishwarupa – the son of Tvasta.

Vrishaparva – the father of Sharmishtha.

Vritrasura – a demon killed by Indra.

Vyomasura – the bat demon.

  • Yes its write that all Asur are not bad .For example Seshnag . Seshnag. Was the son of sage kashyap and KaliyaNag was also a son of sage kashyap but Seshnag was good and KaliyaNag was bad

  • The most powerful asura name is …[Jalandhar ..Andhak .Lohitang] this three asura can’t be killed because this three asura is lord Shiva and Parvati ansh or the part …Only their energy can be taken back. And this is possible only when they realize their own mistakes Even Tridev or Tridevi cannot kill them

    • Thanks a lot. I will update it. Jarasandh was not actually an Asura. He was joined by a female Asura named Jara. Because of that, he had many Asura-like qualities. Mohasura is already there.
