Sanskrit is the most ancient language in the world. It is considered the mother of all languages. Hindus believe that Sanskrit is the language of the gods. In ancient times, it was a common language in India but afterward, its status descended and it was confined to the Hindu scriptures only. Brahmins in India denied to teach it to others as it was the language of God.

Because of that Sanskrit has become an endangered language now. If proper efforts are not made to popularize it, it could become extinct also. Many organizations are trying to promote it. Most of the languages in India spoken to date are similar to it in many ways such as grammar and vocabulary. Even in English, there are hundreds of words that are akin to Sanskrit.

Many organizations in India are trying to promote Sanskrit through different means. They are organizing free classes of it and are distributing free books to promote it. It is also part of the official curriculum in most of the high schools in India. Students opt for it as it is a high-scoring subject for them. But the main support it needs is from the government.

If the government decides to promote it by heart, then nothing could stop it. It is also the duty of all of us to promote it as it is an integral part of our culture. Most of the Hindu scriptures, shlokas, mantras, and other religious materials are written in Sanskrit only. To understand their meaning, we have to learn it. Rigveda, which is considered the first book in human civilization, is also written in the Sanskrit language.

According to the 2011 census, there are about 25,000 people in the world who speak Sanskrit. This number is increasing exponentially nowadays.
